GivingTuesday 2017

With Halloween passing and November arriving, the month of thanks and giving begins. As we look towards the holiday season, it’s important to not forget about an amazing day solely dedicated to giving back: #GivingTuesday.

What is #GivingTuesday?
#GivingTuesday, the Tuesday after the recognizable shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, is a global movement that inspires people around the world to take collaborative action to improve their local communities and contribute in countless ways to the causes they believe in. Started in the NYC 92nd Street YMCA in 2012, #GivingTuesday falls closer in line with the holiday theme of giving back and giving thanks compared to its consumption-centric counterparts.

While organizers and donors can participate in the spirit of giving in a variety of ways, such as volunteering in the local community or organizing a fundraiser, they can also turn to crowdfunding platforms. Crowdfunding platforms have a big role in the #GivingTuesday movement as one of the top places to find worthy charitable causes. Crowdfunding platforms enable organizers of all shapes and sizes to host campaigns and donors to make online contributions to these campaigns quickly and easily.

As discovered from a recent DataDive session, guided by DataKind and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, we learned there have been sizeable donation spikes each year during #GivingTuesday since 2012. This powerful digital movement generates just as much engagement and donation as a relief campaign after a global natural disaster.

When is #GivingTuesday this year?
#GivingTuesday falls on Tuesday, November 28, 2017.

But why wait? We encourage donating to charitable causes no matter what time of the year it is.

How does #GivingTuesday work?
If you’re looking to start a campaign, you can set one up with a worthy cause, an inspirational story, and a goal through a number of crowdfunding platforms. If you’re looking to donate to a campaign, determining which campaign to contribute to is up to you.

If you’re unsure where to start:

  • As a campaign organizer, research crowdfunding platforms to see what kind of programs or incentives they’re offering. In previous years, platforms provided kits to assist organizers create and keep track of their campaigns or they promised to match a campaign’s donation total if a specific contribution goal was met, for example.
  • As a donor, research the hashtag #GivingTuesday on search engines and/or social media and look through the various posts – you will find different crowdfunding platforms and organizations promoting #GivingTuesday. You might find a campaign you like and resonate with more than others. Also, if you know of a friend that started a campaign, you can always start by donating there.

No matter how you choose to participate in #GivingTuesday, remember that every bit of giving helps.
