So your ski house is rented, your skis are on the roof rack, and you’re looking for some movies to bring along in case you should find yourself and your friends combating cabin fever (or, in the worst case, a broken bone) on your ski vacation.

We’ll admit it. Most major motion pictures that revolve around skiing aren’t exactly Oscar material. But they are good for some laughs, some funny ski scenes, some big hair, and most importantly, for keeping you ski-ready all week. What follows are some suggestions of skiing “films” to entertain your exhausted brain after a long day of trekking up and down hills.

1. Hot Dog

A quintessential “teen romp,” Hot Dog is the story of a country boy, a sexy hitchhiker, and a skiing competition. Hot Dog completely deserves its solid two stars from the TV Guide, but will provide some laughs and plenty of skiing. (If you can get over the 1984 ski fashions.)

2. Better Off Dead

Teen angst and skiing. John Cusak plays Lane Meyer, a teenager who must win a ski competition to reclaim the girlfriend who left him for a rival skier. Look for the ski pole sword fight. But don’t try it at home!

3. Ski Party

If you prefer your ski movies wholesome, Ski Party is for you. Frankie Avalon stars in this movie about two college boys who pretend to be a couple of British school girls in order to pick up chicks at a ski resort, and they do it all 60’s style. With musical numbers!

4. Ski Patrol

An evil developer tries to sabotage a ski resort’s safety record so he can take it over, but is thwarted at every turn by a misfit ski patrol. The real ski patrol probably won’t find quotes from this movie amusing… if they’re old enough to have seen it back in 1990.

5.  Out Cold
Another evil developer story, but this time the resort is in Alaska and the action is snowboarding.  This one is worth the watch for young Zach Galifianakis alone.
