When two struggling families appeared as guests on The Oprah Winfrey Show to talk about the home foreclosures they were facing, they had no idea a surprise guest would make their problems disappear.
The Eller family and the Allgood family shared their stories with Oprah and explained how the national recession took its toll on them. For John Eller, losing his job as a corporate executive forced him to take lower paying jobs in order to support his wife and eight children. He explains, “I’ve been an executive in a major corporation, and I’ve also made doughnuts on a graveyard shift working in a bakery for $10 an hour. I’ve had to do whatever it takes.” Despite his best efforts, he couldn’t afford the mortgage for their dream home. For single mother Alycia Allgood, buying her first home after years of saving was an accomplishment she could be proud of, but when her company downsized, she too fell months behind on her mortgage payments.
To the surprise of both families, Black Eyed Peas star Will.i.am stepped forward to pay the $350,000 owed by the Ellers and the Allgoods, Oprah.com reports.
Will.i.am hopes to continue helping families facing foreclosure. He has created the i.am home fund to collect donations for families struggling with mortgage payments, at risk for losing their homes.
“If you bring people together who have big hearts and [are] caring, they can make a difference and help America’s problem out,” he says.

I saw you on Oprah and I was wondering if you help people like me. I had a house in Ohio with a small $50 thousand
mortgage from refinancing. I moved to Indiana and put the
house up for sale because I was promiced a full time job as a
news announcer at WCOE FM. I had been in radio for over 40 years. The largest market that I ever worked was Las Vegas,
Nevada. Moved back to Toledo, Ohio to take care of my mom after
a divorce in Vegas. Couldn’t find anything but part-time jobs.
Then my mom died in May of 2004. Three years later I went to a
wedding in LaPorte, Indiana. I visited the local radio station and they liked my airchecks that were on CD. They hired me full time, but after two weeks, told me that they couldn’t afford me
full time. This after I had moved lock stock and barrel to LaPorte, Indiana. I even bought a house here and relized I might have to place my house in Ohio up for rent. So a friend of mine rent the house on a 12 month lease with no deposit. He skuipped out on me owing me for 6 monthd rent. Being I didn’t receive
money from him, I wasn’t able to pay the mortgage for 6 months.
I’m in danger of losing that house to forclosure.
I was able to pay on my house in LaPorte as I worked a retail job and just part-time at the radio station, because of their
budget. After a year working the retail job, I was forced to
leave because I was a whistle blower to unfair labor practices. So I was out of a job. Now I’m on Social Security, because I’m 62 and needed to have some kind of income. I only get $955 a month. Is’s hard because I’m in danger of losing the house in Ohio and the one in Indiana where I live now.
Because of my age no one will hire me. I have 40 years in broadcasting, 9 years in military public relations, a bachlors
degree in business, Nevada Broadcast Hall of Fame recipient and now a failure. What or where did I go wrong? Well Will that was a great thing you did for those families. Keep up the great work.

I love the the “Black Eyed Peas”, my daughter is a fan too, she is 8 years old and we listen to “I got a feeling”, on her way to school everyday.
Resently,I lost my job and collected unemployment, during that time, I decided to go back to school, using some of the incentives that President Obama offered, I was able to go back to school. In fact,I graduated last weekend.
Unfortunately, I could not keep the payments on our home,as a result, I had to declare bankruptcy and my home is on the verge of forclosing. I am not sure if you can help, but if you can we could use the help.

I have an idea that may help more people. It would be a miracle for me to have my mortgage payed off, but maybe it would be better and save your organization and be able to help more people. My mortgage is 176,000 if your organization would pay half of the candidates mortgage it would be a much more affordable payment and also make them responsilbe for a portion. For instance, my payment is $1302. and if half of the mortgage were paid it would be $650. I am behind on my mortgage and I am so afraid that I might loose my home. My mortgage company says, they are trying to qualifying me for a a program that President Obama introduced “MAKING HOMES AFFORDABLE” they have had me in this program for over a year and nothing has happened. I don’t think it will happen and I’m going to be stuck. I am 61 years old and I have one daughter who has been very will for 12 years. in and out of hospitals, once for four months. They have finally found new medication that is working very well. I have supported her for many years. She had surgery twice last summer. Her health is pretty good at this time. Again if you could think about paying off half or all of my mortgage it will give let me keep my home and my daughter a home she knows. I will be 62 in November and will receive about $1000. in social security benefits and the 650 mortgage would be very easy to manage. My retirement from work can pay for most everything else. This would be a miracle.
Dear God no one understands unless they are in this situation I am also about to lose my home aft working in banking over 25 yrs I lost my job on April 1, 2009 and have still not been able to find a job. Who wants to hire a 54 yr old person and give them the same pay? I have been on several interviews and have not received a job offer and the salaries discussed are 1/2 of what I made!!! I am sad and deeply depressed…….with no light at the end of any tunnel.

will i know u get a story everyday about people’s struggle i have always been someone to care about what people are going through whatever i could do to help people i did i’m not rich but i have always been the type to put people first before myself well in april of 2009 i was dignoised with loupus rumatoid arthurritis and fibromyalgia i have four kids and i was married for seven years my husband left me and the kids in november of 2009 i have filled for child support it came through child support is not much my job disablity is not that much and on top of that i had to drop out of nursing school my husband felt the need to leave after my physical apperance changed the medicine took out my hair and one the drug for the treatment was steroids and i gained a lot of wait not mention i had to deal with the fact that he had another baby during the marriage i’m not trying to write you a sob story to get some free help me dose’nt matter but my kids do and living in a hotel with no transportation and no help just a little money we need a house something we can call home some place my kids can feel sucure m y children don’t deserve this i have three girls and one boy my husband has not one time picked up the phone to see how the kids are living dose’nt know if we are living are dead please help me will i am thanks raven

In disperation I’ve prayed each night that someone like you will come and help those who are in need of assistance in this kind of situation. Indeed, God has sent us one great individual who realized the value of helping others and we praise the Lord. This is how my story goes: I have an aunt who worked so hard in her life to send us to school since we are very poor .My mom, her sister welcomed it with gratitude. We did too, before my aunt’s retirement we were able to put together some cash to buy her a home in Pa. and we paid the monthly mortgage, her utilities and almost everything that she needs. Until the catastrophic event happened, one at a time we lost our jobs. We did applied for jobs but to no avail we’re still unemployed until now. Since November 2009 we havent paid her mortgage, we havent paid for 2009 property tax and the one for this year. I dont know what’s going to happen now. The bank said a letter will be sent to her anytime soon to vacate the house. We don’t want that to happen to her. She deserve a better life now that she’s old and retired. Her monthly check will not pay for the mortgage and the other necessities in life. We tried our very best to give her what she deserves. My aunt is now 74 yrs old. Please help us Mr. Will…

Hello – I saw the Oprah show and thought – wow a kindred spirit – I had come up with a similar idea and strted sending letters out to the top 100 Billionaires. However, I was not famous so I only received form letters in return. I am so happy that someone of your stature has gotten involved in this mission. You are truly a chosen one. I know that many people are in trouble and I want to help. However, I lost my job in January and I am now trying to hold on to my house for my husband and three children by the skin of my teeth. I am the youngest of 10. I grew up in a blue collar neighbor hood. Buying my home was somehting I thought was only a dream. I love my home – my 3 children will be devastated to loose our house. I have no money to try to get an apartment? I only need enough to get through the next few months – I am sure a job will come my way – but being overwhelmed with dept and worry is so difficult. My 20 year old just got a job after looking for 2 years. He is trying to help us withour mortgage. My 16 year old is looking for a job so she can help us as well. I was searching Google for help with my situation. I came across your site. I’m also having problems and don’t know where to turn and have no one to help me. I have been having trouble with my mortgage through Wells Fargo. I jumped through all the hoops they ask me too. A Guy from titanium solutions shows up at my door on Easter…yes that’s right I said Easter morning. Then next I call them and before I know it they can’t help. I have been in therapy and out of work since April because I have herniated disk in neck and back. To top it off I also have vertigo. If vertigo don’t go away then my job might not take me back. I have been a Boiler operator for the last four years and vertigo is not a good thing to have I’m a power plant. Its starting to look like I could be put on permanent disability and I have child support to keep up with. I don’t know where to turn. Just wondering if a single mom might have any chance in being accepted for the i am home fund? After falling of the loading dock at work, I will never be able to do the same job I used to do. Staples and stitches in my head, and broken wrist beyond total function now, I don’t have many choices . It hurts to think about how I’ve worked for my family by myself all this time and I still can’t breathe. It also hurts, thinking about getting put out because I have no where to go.
I am sitting here and reading all the issues that people is having and I said I am no different from anyone, why should you help me? you have read all the others, my situation is not unique. I only only know how I feel with my situation. I have been out of work since July of 2009. I worked in the mortgage industry for over 20 years, I have helped hundreds of families achieve the American dream of owning a home. I felt good when I see those people get their keys at closing and say thank you and leave with a smile on their faces. I also achieve the American dream 12 years ago and I experienced that feeling and it was great, with the industry taking the direction it did, none of us imagined this would happen and so many people loosing their homes, we did not do anything wrong life just happened to us. I had some money saved and I used that money to make my mortgage payments and pay the rest of my bills until there was nothing left, I was hoping to find a job before all was gone but that did not happen. I had a total hip replacement on June 2nd, 2010 after suffering with this for 17 years and being in pain every day. I am now recovering from my surgery. I am actively looking for a job but nothing yet, I am a strong believer that God is in control of my life and by me being writing this letter, I believe he has something to do with this. I don’t know why it was rest upon my heart to contact you today but I am not questioning it you never where God is going to show up. I have not been served with foreclosing notice yet but I know it is only a matter of time. I need your help to make my mortgage payments but I would rather have a Job so I can make the payments. I am a mortgage loan closer by trade, I do closings, pre closings and post closing if anyone has a position, I would work anywhere the job is. I just need to have a home for my daughter to come home to when she come home from school. Hi I am Anissa Charles and I am the 17 year old daughter of Paul and Fay Ford. About five years ago my family moved to the Gulf Coast in Biloxi, Mississippi. This was just two weeks before hurricane Katrina hit. Our house was not yet built but we baught the property and everything already.
At the time my step-father Paul was working a fairly good job. For about 3 or 4 years everything was going great with both of my parents working. Then my step-dady lost his job and my mothers job alone could not pay for the mortage and support 3 kids so my step applied for any job possible. Because of the economy he was unable to get a job anywhere which led my step-dad to applying for unemployment.
Unemployment was helping but not enough so we got the monthly payment on our mortage lowered. Just recently my step-dad was able to get a job working with the oil clean up but he never knew when he would go to work or what his pay check will look like. Right now there is no more work for him to do with the oil spill and we are back to where we started.
My oldest brother is in the Air Force and he sends money and helps out as much as he can. My second eldest brother is in college and I am in high school. Both of my parents are extremely hard workers and I know this would mean so much to my family.

I am writing with one of the many sad stories in this great country! My friend lost everything in Katrina. Her home and all her treasured possessions, her job- she was a nurse in a hospital that is still to this day struggling to come back, her neibors and close work friends! She was just starting to feel whole again- working as nurse and bought a house that was somewhat beyond her means but in the inner city of New Orleans and felt she was contributing to the city’s rebirth. For reasons out of her control she was fired from her nursing position. All her pt’s loved her and she had a clean record. She is compassionate and giving person and nurse. She feels so helpless and struggling to move on! If she could get any help from your foundation she may be able to pick up pieces and get strength to continue nursing. She is a great nurse and those are hard to come by. She would not be able to ask for a hand out but I am writing in her behalf. Please consider my friend in need. You are an angel and I know there are many sad stories. I will tell my friends about your foundation and hope you are able to collect enough to help those in desparate need.

Hi Will, I am living in South Africa, and know that you only support people in the USA. I am in desperate need, when I saw you on The Opera Show (we saw the broadcast in AUG/SEPT 2010), I thought that I am going to write to and ask for assistance. I lost my husband due to cancer in 2008 on Valentine’s Day. He struggled with cancer since 2004. He didn’t provide for us. I feel that I suffered enough and could do with some laughter in life.
I don’t want to bother you now with lots of detail.
I lost my love of my life. If that was not enough I had to re-apply for mortgage to transfer our home over into my name, it was a struggle from the start go, but at the end thanks to The Lord for His help, I was told that I now qualify, R960 000.
My late husband’s estate is still not finalized, because there is no funds to settle the estate. The amount of the estate is plus minus R200 000.00.
I also have three kids ages, 26, 24 and 14 years of age, and they also worry about the unsettled estate. But there is just nothing that I can do about it.
I don’t want to sound like a beggar and I also don’t want anybody to feel sorry for me, it is not my intention.
There is just no words that can describe how thankful I would be if you could help me although I am in South Africa.

Dear Will i am, what you are doing is amazing. How great to be able to help others. I am in need of your help, I wish that I could be the one donating instead of asking for a donation. I am a mother of 5 year old triplets, 2 years ago I lost my job as a paramedic, I worked there for 7 years full time and thought that we were on top of our financial situation. I made the decision to go back to nursing school so I could provide for my family. My husband got laid off that same year and we were trying to raise a family on unemployment. I had to take out student loans and withdraw everything from my 401K to try and stay afloat. Needless to say it hasn’t been working. Dear Mr. Will I Am, I was so touched watching the Opora Show and seeing that God had sent an angel to help these families that I decided to write you myself. I am a single Mom of 66 yrs young. I survived 2 (didn’t learn the 1st time) alcoholic abusive husbands, worked all of my life trying to provide for my 2 children on my own. They both are elepicitic and have degenerated disc’s in their back. I retired from banking when my Mom passed and then took in my Dad and took care of him. I had to quit my second job to take care of him until he passed in 2004 and my life has gone downhill ever since. In 2008 I was hospitalized and woke up 4 days later in the intensive care unit on a ventalator and I have COPD. When that happened, of course I didn’t have any insurance so the problems started. The credit cards wouldn’t work me and it went from bad to worse. I only owe 43,000 on my home but one credit card wants to take my home because I owe them 24,000.00. They served me a summons and if I didn’t agree to $575.00 a month till the year 2014 I would lose my home. I have soc. sec. and rent from a home that my Mom left me and that is all the money I have. I have gone thru all of my savings, retirement, insurance policies and if something were to happen to me my kids would have to put me in the freezer until they could get the money to bury me. I was always able to talk with my Dad and Mom but both of them are gone. I don’t have a partner in life or no where to turn. If I could just get some of the credit cards off me, it would be such a help. I have tried the modification route but they tell me I have too much credit card dept to handle. I have looked into a reverse mortgage and then my kids would not be able to afford to get the house. I have searched every avenue and come up empty handed. I have found myself questioning God as to why all this has happened but I trust him and I know there must be a reason. This problem has caused alot of unforseen problems with my kids and that is also a big problem now. I live in so much fear that I am going to lose my home it causes me to have a hard time breathing. I have a hard time breathing so a job would be hard for me at this time and the stress is not helping either. I know my story is nothing compared to the people out there struggling and I wish so much that I could be able to help them as you are doing. Our family like far to many , same story no work , scammed into the bad mortgage, and run you into insanity trying to get help, We live in Naples, when I saw what you did on Oprah, I thought how I would have had a heart attack to have that happen, You are an amazing human an angel on the earth that has turned to hell , Anyhow we have always been self employed at the height of our company we had 17 employee’s , I know we helped them provide for their families and saw as a couple guys had babies, it was a great time. It was a construction company Concrete , anyhow know going to lose our house unless the economy changes fast, I have 2 kids grown but now have 3 grandkids , If we could get help it just I think about how they may have a chance If I had something to leave them because when It turns around We have a nice home but right now it isn’t worth 1/4 of what it did, I didn’t use it like a piggy bank when It appraised @$700,000. but we do owe $300,000
If any one could help save our home my husband could build fix do whatever to help payback and hopefully when prices aren’t this bad ,It’s bad in SW Florida . If we can’t keep it we could at least have enough it get a somewhere big enough for my grandbabies Treyvon 6 Trinidi 7 and Toby 3 I feel so pathetic writing this because I feel I made all the mistakes , I’m sorry I can’t help family
I’m going on 65 years of age. Being desperate, I typed in the search engine for help as I am about to lose my home. It brought me to the Oprah video and to “i.am” video. I have helped others who desperately needed my help but now it’s my turn and nowhere to turn to. I’ve been working since the age of 7 doing odd babysitting jobs etc..and now am too old to get a decent job.
However, I’m Canadian so I guess that leaves me out.
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Will I Am, I write this note to see if there is a chance of getting any financial help for my brother.
He is a Methodist minister in Ark. and if having financial troubles.he and his wife moved to Ark a few years ago-before he finished his degree to become a minister and they built a house but have needed to sale it or have the mortgage paid off since running into trouble-both he and his wife have medical issues and he, my brother needs surgery on both ankles-he keeps putting it off but has been told that he may end up in a wheele chair eventually if he does not have the surgery-they put the house on the market as they have been paying rent to live in the town where his churches are and the mortgage payments also. His wife Cindy had a stroke last year and while she is doing better-still has medial issues but has to work as she carries the insurance for both of them. My brohter Mark has worked very hard and overcome many things throughout his journey to finding his calling for work in the church-he is so good with people and everyone thinks so much of him-I wish I could help him and I would if I had the means to. I ask and plead with your foundation to see if you could help them in anyway. Thanks for being such a caring and concerned person. God bless you and all that you do.

My husband and I are 58/60 years old. His job of 14 years was out sourced. Our perfect credit was ruined when after 3 years without finding ANY work, we couldn’t pay our bills. We kept our mortgage up on our home of 27 years until 12/09. We went into the home modification program then. To this date, after paying EVERY month Jan.thru August the full payment CitiMortgage told us to pay during the process, they have started foreclosure. WE PAID EVERY MONTH ON THE FIRST AS TOLD and they didn’t apply our $$$ we found out. Now we are offered the THIRD round of getting a modification. Approved 9/27/10. Then the day before it was to be completed, their atty. stopped it all. We have emails and a very detailed timeframe of EVERYthing this year showing they approved our mod. We owe under $32,000 on our $180,000 home. We are being abused by our mortgage company throwing out hoop after hoop and we have complied EVERYtime. Can you offer us any kind of help to stop this insanity they are putting us through? We have NO funds for an attorney and know that if we lose our long term home, we will be on the street. WE NEED HELP GETTING THEM TO FINALIZE OUR ALREADY APPROVED MODIFICATION but without any legal knowledge, they are just bouncing us against the wall every week.
